Driveway Fence & Dog Run

I know the title doesn't sound too sexy or exciting, but this is a project that has upped our home's curb appeal and has been on our to-do list for a long time. I am thrilled to have it done! It has given us privacy and fixed the eyesore by our garage. I wish we would have added this driveway fence and pet run a long time ago! It really has finished off the front of our home.

Driveway & Garage Area Before

There's only about 5 feet from the property line to the garage. Such a narrow space is not really useable for many things.

It usually ended up serving as a dumping ground for junk until we could go to the landfill.

And the window has never been painted since we moved in 15 years ago. I think it was high time it got a facelift!

To preserve the privacy of my neighbors, I do not have before photos of the driveway area before adding the fence. There wasn't a good angle to get a before shot without showing their whole yard and side of their house.

Staining A Fence FAST!

I have stained and painted fences with a brush, a roller, and a sprayer. I am here to tell you that HANDS DOWN the easiest and fastest way to stain a fence is with a sprayer. Especially if you have a long stretch of fencing, you are going to want to make this job as easy as possible. I used my Super Finish Max.

This time around, since the fence would be right up against our concrete driveway and hugging the property line, I opted to spray the panels before attaching them to the posts. It limited the amount of time I was intruding in our neighbor's yard and made it so I didn't have to worry about getting stain on the driveway.

I added plastic tarps to our backyard fence to protect it from overspray, and got to work spraying both side of each panel.

I prefer to use a product that is a stain and sealer in one. Once I am done spraying, I use a bucket designated for cleaning sprayers and brushes, and some mineral spirits to clean the sprayer. Wear latex gloves and clean all the parts individually. I like to put some mineral spirits in the sprayer and run it through to ensure that it got all clean. Make sure and dispose of the used cleaner properly.

Dog Run Area

The window got a much needed paint job. I used a wire brush to get as much of the old paint off as I could. Then I replaced the broken pane of glass. I caulked the whole thing before adding a new coat of paint.

I also added some easy DIY shutters to match the window on the other side of the garage.

Kevin, our French Bulldog, uses this space as his potty area. Years ago new neighbors moved in that kept their dog tied up near the property line and it made our big "tough" dog a little nervous to go to the bathroom. That is what first prompted us to put up a fence.

After debating about options (ground cover, real grass, ect) we decided to go with pet turf. It was kind of pricey but it should last for a long time. It will be nice to no longer have to worry about him tracking in mud after a rain or snow storm! The pet turf will be the perfect, low maintenance solution to weeds and mud!

The Reveal!

I think after redoing the front yard landscaping, giving the garage a makeover, and getting a new roof, I can officially say that the front of our house is finally DONE! The driveway fence was the perfect final addition.

When the kids are playing basketball, the new fence will keep them from having to chase the ball into the neighbor's yard as well. At least not as often :)
